On Friday, Indian Lake will start preparing for the Beach Spectacular at Old Field Beach.
The Saturday event will include events all day at the beach beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a car show. Pageants also start at 11:00 including the crowning of Miss Indian Lake. The Finalists for Indian Lake's Got Talent will take the stage at 3:30 and the judges will pick the winner around 6:00. At 6:00 WPKO will take over as Matt Smith will host the Nite Mix live from the beach with requests and dedications along with games and prizes. This all sets the stage for the biggest show of the night - a 20-minute fireworks display starting at 10 p.m. with the Martin's Landscaping Skyfire soundtrack playing a mix of music with the fireworks. During the show, around 1,400 shots will be set off, ranging from three to six-inch shells.
The fireworks are funded by local businesses and donations provided by Indian Lake residents in donation cans. This year’s show costs around $25,000.
Zambelli, from New Castle, Pennsylvania, will be setting of the fireworks electronically.
The event, held on the Saturday closest to the 4th, is expected to have more than 50,000 spectators. Pack your sunsreen and bring plenty of water because temperatures are expected to be near 100 at the peak of the day. Also pack your radio and tune in to 98.3 WPKO.
In the 90s, Bill Reed took on the project of putting on the fireworks at Indian Lake. In 1998 Reed handed the job over to Steve Spath, who has been doing it since. Before Reed took over, the average show spent under $1,000 on fireworks.
Steve Spath talks about the event.
