Youth got a chance to act as judges during the Dairy Judging contest at the Logan County Fair on Thursday.
Anyone under 19 is allowed to participate. 4 heifers are in the arena and an actual judge asks the contestants a total of 10 questions. Questions included which heifer has most slope from hooks to pen, which heifer has the steepest foot, which heifer has the longest/leanest neck, which heifer is the most angular over their shoulder, which heifer has the straightest rear legs, which heifer is the tallest at its shoulder, and which heifer has the most openness of rib.
The students then decide what the correct answer to each question is. These questions help the students to place the heifers in the order that the actual judge deems is the correct order. The students then turn in their final answers and the cards are graded.

This contest helps youth to learn more about dairy judging from a different perspective. Students can take this new knowledge to help them when they are involved in a dairy judging competition. Also, it is another way to get more youth involved in fair activities.
