Customer assists in armed robbery arrest

The Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to two 911 calls reporting an armed robbery at the Rushsylvania One Stop around 4 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses reported the suspect, Wyatt L. Covington, 20, at-large, entered the convenience store, pulled a handgun and demanded cash. The employees complied and gave Covington an undisclosed amount of cash and he fled the store.

Minutes later, the Sheriff’s Office received a separate 911 call reporting that Covington had been captured near 163 Stewart Street, Rushsylvania.

Immediately after the robbery, a customer entered the store and was informed of the incident. He then left the store and quickly located the suspect walking on Stewart Street. The customer was able to gain control of the suspect while village residents contacted the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrived to take Covington into custody. They found and removed from Covington’s possession a plastic, toy gun and a fixed blade knife.

The incident is still under investigation.

The name of the heroic customer has not been released.

Covington was charged with aggravated robbery and is lodged in the Logan County Jail.
