Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities gathers for August meeting (Audio included)

The Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities (pictured) held their monthly meeting Thursday evening to discuss topics including personnel, fiscal policy and district updates.

The Board approved the hiring of instructor Hayley Nease, of Bellefontaine. Nease is set to start next week.

June’s severe storm blew away the sign at the Discovery Center. It will be replaced along with two compressors that sustained damage from lightning. Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities Superintendent Saul Bauer says the compressors could amount to around $15,000 to replace.

Governor Kasich’s Mid-biennium Review was passed in June, which calls for all county boards to pick up certification for all employees (excluding the Superintendent and investigative agent) and keep records of those certifications in the county rather than submit them to the state, creating a more demanding workload for the Board. This new requirement takes affect in September.

At the end of each state fiscal year, the Board approves a budget for their Bridges to Transitions program, which works to help individuals with developmental disabilities find or keep employment. The 2013 Bridges to Transitions budget was presented by Community Employment Project Coordinator Tonya Reed and approved by the Board.

At June’s meeting, the Board discussed its new SELF waiver program, which serves children with developmental disabilities in Logan County. Bauer says the Board has received its first waiver for a child. The waiver provides Medicaid to those who would not normally receive it because their income is above the poverty line. The program became available July 1.

A Chicken Barbeque will take place October 4 at the Logan County Developmental Disabilities Building from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cost will be $7 per meal. This year’s menu will also feature drinks for the first time at a cost of $1 per drink. Bauer says the event is the Board’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

The next meeting for the Logan County Developmental Disabilities Board will be September 20 at 5:30 p.m. The public is also welcome to attend the Board’s finance meeting which will take place September 13 at 7 a.m.
