Union Township Welcomed into Macochee Joint Ambulance District

The eastern half of Union Township in Logan County has been formally welcomed into full membership in the Macochee Joint Ambulance District. Union Township’s trustees passed a resolution petitioning the board of the Macochee board for membership. This petition was accepted by the board, resulting in transition of the eastern half of Union Township from contract coverage to full district membership. Approximately 11.74 square miles of territory and 480 residents of Union Township are now a formal part of the Macochee Joint Ambulance District.

Residents of the part of Union Township covered by this arrangement have received EMS protection from Macochee EMS (and the former West Liberty EMS) since 1974. The area had been protected until now under a contract arrangement based on an annual payment by township trustees and supplemented by service billing of patients.

Beginning in 2013, Union Township residents who are now a part of the district will pay no out-of-pocket expenses for EMS services, just as all residents of the district proper. As a full district member, Union Township will be represented on the joint ambulance district board by Trustee Steve Yoder.

With Union Township formally joining the district, residents of the Macochee EMS coverage area will now be covered under the existing 3.5-mill ambulance service levy approved last March by district voters. Property owners will see the levy reflected in their 2012 tax bills.

Under the provisions of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC) section 505.71, township trustees are authorized to join an existing joint ambulance district. The entire township may be made a part of the district or, as in this case, a portion of the township may be made a part as mutually agreed with the district board. The western half of Union Township will continue to receive EMS protection from Riverside EMS in DeGraff.

As part of discussions among the district board, township trustees and Logan County Auditor Michael Yoder, it was agreed to adjust the Macochee EMS coverage area in Union Township to follow the existing school district boundaries. This adjustment will simplify property tax valuation and voting precinct assignments. Union Township parcels in the West Liberty-Salem and Bellefontaine City School Districts were made a part of the Macochee Joint Ambulance District, while those residents within the Riverside School District will be covered by Riverside EMS. The result is that an area of 2.24 square miles will be transferred to Riverside EMS coverage in 2013; encompassing approximately 39 Union Township residents (based on 2010 Census estimates).
