Logan County Recorder Linda Hanson (pictured) is warning us about a property deeds scam that was recently reported to her office.
Hanson was contacted by a local resident about a solicitation letter from a company offering a copy of the person's property deed for $83. The deed processing notice is from 1300 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington DC.
You can request copies of your deed at the recorder's office, 100 South Madriver Street, Suite A, Bellefontaine, for .25 a page if you make the copy. The recorder's office will make a copy for $2 per page. Most deeds are usually two or three pages.
Hanson reminds us that once your deed is filed with her office it is a permanent record of your ownership and protects your property rights. You are not required to have a copy or even the original deed. Your rights and ownership are safe and secure at the recorder's office.
If you receive one of these scam letters, contact Hanson at 599-7201.
