DP&L is making preparations for the winter storm that is expected to strike the Miami Valley Thursday afternoon. The forecast is calling for gusty winds, along with rain and snow showers. High winds with gusts of 50 mph are expected.
Because of these high winds, DP&L is increasing staffing for Thursday and Friday. The power company has also initiated storm emergency preparations and postponed routine maintenance in order to keep most of its crews ready to respond to emergency situations.
Winds exceeding 40 mph often cause tree limbs or debris to blow into power lines causing outages. Trees may also become uprooted by high winds, taking down power lines as they fall.
While the rain and snow should not cause significant outages, it will make working conditions challenging for DP&L through Friday.
Customer Safety and Storm Preparation Tips:
Fallen power lines:
-Notify DP&L of lines that are down by calling 877-4OUTAGE (877-468-8243). For life-threatening emergencies due to a power line: call 911.
-Treat all wires as if they are live. Keep children and pets away. NEVER touch a power line.
Be prepared in case of a power outage:
-If your home requires electricity for water, make sure you have an ample supply.
-Customers with medical conditions or who require electricity to power equipment should have a back-up plan if their power goes out.
-Have a storm kit with battery-operated or wind-up emergency radio, water, flashlights, batteries, first aid kit, and blankets.
-Unplug sensitive and expensive electronics before the storm to prevent damage.
