Two school issues highlight May primary

Wednesday was the filing deadline for issues and candidates for the May primary election.

Local voters will consider several issues, including a countywide issue.

The Logan County Health Board has a .75 mill additional current operating expenses levy on the ballot. If passed, the levy will span ten years.

There are two school issues on the ballot.

Benjamin Logan has placed a 4.6 mill additional levy, which will cover ten years.

The new millage requires voters to pay an additional $140 per $100,000 of property owned. This is the first time since 2000 that the district is asking residents for new money.

West Liberty-Salem has placed a 1 percent income tax renewal on the ballot.

In November, a 7.05 mill bond issue for renovating and constructing additions to the district failed by 98 votes.

Quincy will seek voter approval on two issues.

An additional 2 mill levy for current expenses and an additional 2 mill levy for street repairs will be considered.

A pair of 3.2 mill replacement levies were defeated 55 percent to 45 percent last fall.

Stokes Township residents will vote on a fire protection issue. The 1.6 mill renewal levy is for five years.

There is just one contested city race in May.

Republican incumbent Second Ward Council Member Diane Hager is facing opposition from fellow Republican Marcus St. Clair.

In the council at large seats, Republicans Allen Hadley and Deborah Baker are seeking re-election. Democrat Jim Sanford also appears on the ballot.

Council President David Henry (R), First Ward Councilman Dave Haw (D), Third Ward Councilman Peter DeSomma (R), and Fourth Ward Councilman Jerry Pitzer (D) are seeking another term.

Tom Reynolds (R) is running in the first ward.

Longtime city councilman Mark Fissel (D) is running for city treasurer.
