A driver was killed in a weather-related head-on collision on I-75 near Botkins Tuesday morning around 3:15.
The Wapakoneta Post of the State Highway Patrol reports that Bret Woods, 46, of Toledo, was driving a minivan northbound when he lost control on an icy bridge, then drove across the median and into the southbound lanes. The van was struck on the driver's side by a 2012 Peterbilt semi operated by Dean Harris of Oshawa, Ontario.
Woods was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the van, Bernadette Woods of Toledo, was transported to Lima Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Harris was not injured.
The crash ruptured the driver's side fuel tank of the semi, causing about 200 gallons of diesel fuel to spill on the roadway. The semi jackknifed across both southbound lanes of the interstate.
Moments later, a southbound 2006 Freightliner driven by William Hildebrand of North Freedom, Wisconsin, was unable to stop and struck the first semi's trailer.
Hildebrand suffered minor injuries. He was transported to Wilson Memorial Hospital.
The Ohio EPA responded to the scene.
Botkins and Anna Fire, Police, and EMS along with ODOT assisted at the scene.
The State Patrol continues their investigation.
