Justice Yvette McGee Brown to speak at Urbana University commencement

Urbana University announced recently that Justice Yvette McGee Brown (pictured), former member of the Ohio Supreme Court, will serve as the speaker for the 121st commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4th at 11:00 am in the Warren G. Grimes Center.

Her dedication to serving others will be recognized with an honorary doctorate degree from Urbana University.

“We are honored to have Justice McGee Brown as our commencement speaker and know that her message will be an inspiration to the graduates and guests,” said President Stephen Jones.

Justice McGee Brown was recently named a partner in the Columbus law firm, Jones Day, after a long and distinguished judicial and public service career.  She was first elected to the Franklin County Common Pleas Court, Domestic Relations and Juvenile division in 1992 where she served until 2002. McGee Brown took her experience on the bench to the Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, to create the Center for Child and Family Advocacy. As one of four NCH presidents, she was responsible for the 400 employees overseeing the hospital’s Behavioral Health, Child Abuse, and Developmental Pediatrics departments; one of the finest in the country.

She graduated from Ohio University with a BS in Journalism in 1982 and The Ohio State University law school in 1985. Following her years as an outstanding student, she began her career and service in Columbus and throughout Ohio. Justice McGee Brown served on the boards of Ohio University, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center, and the National Council of the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law.

Justice McGee Brown has also received honors for her community service; she was awarded the Ohio University Medal of Merit, Ohio State University Distinguished Service Award, YWCA Woman of Achievement Award, Women of Color Foundation Woman of the Year, Girl Scout Great Award, and inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.
