Nine sportscaster campers at the Bellefontaine Summer Enrichment Academy learned the ins and outs of baseball play-by-play this week.
The campers (pictured left, top row, left to right: Anthony Snapp, Logan Holycross, Lindsay Stevenson, Ethan Fulkerson, Morgan Smith; bottom row, left to right: Ethan Parker, Michael Horvath, Tyler Roberts, and Erin Casto) spent the week completing a variety of activities.
The campers played Table Topics where they would pick a topic out of a bowl at random and perform a minute-long speech about their topic. The campers learned how to confront their fears of public speaking and were given critiques on how they could improve.
The campers also learned how to write a commercial for a made-up business and performed it in front of the class (pictured right, Matt Smith teaches the campers about commercials.)
They were trained by Bill Tipple on how to ask an open-ended question and how to conduct an interview. Baseball play-by-play training on a PlayStation 2, sports topic debates, and a sports trivia game also kept the campers entertained throughout the week.
The camper’s hard work culminated Thursday night when they performed play-by-play at an ACME league baseball game between Bellefontaine and Troy live on 1390 WBLL and the game was also streamed live on Peakofohio.com. The campers rotated between working with color commentators Bill Tipple and Terry Lash and each camper was able to call a full inning of baseball action. First-year camper Anthony Snapp was asked what his favorite part of the week was and he responded, “I would say the ball game, because my favorite sport is baseball and I thought that it was really cool because I’ve always been jealous of the guys that broadcast baseball.”

Friday morning the campers were able to go on a morning talk show on 1390 WBLL with Bill Tipple where they debated a wide variety of issues in the sporting world. The campers discussed topics such as, who is the better coach between Urban Meyer and Nick Saban? Who is the best player in the NFL today? Who has the best chance at winning the World Series, amongst other questions. Second-year camper Logan Holycross really enjoyed the talk show saying, “My favorite part of the week probably has to be the sports talk show with Bill Tipple on 1390 WBLL the Bell.”

Campers were briefed on the topics that they would be discussing on the show a few days in advance and conducted research out of class to be prepared for the morning talk show.
This is the sixth consecutive summer that the camp has been running. Chad Wilkinson started the sports broadcasters camp at the Hilliker YMCA six years ago, where the camp was held for four years. This is the second year that the camp has been a part of the Bellefontaine Summer Enrichment Academy.
The campers varied in age, but all of them are going to be in junior high school next year. Anyone between the ages of 10 through 17 was allowed to enter in the camp.
