Lutheran Community Services aids Logan County residents who are in need.
The organization offers Our Daily Bread, the Christmas Food and Toy Basket program, a thrift store, food pantry, and Loving Hands Adult Daycare.
Our Daily Bread is a free meal program available to the public. The program is from 4:30 pm to 6 pm Monday through Friday during the summer months of June, July, and August. This is because many students in the Bellefontaine School District are on free or reduced lunches. Without school in the summer those kids would be looking for food somewhere else and the organization decided to go to five days a week to help with that need. The program is held at 223 Oakland Square (across for the Bellefontaine Fire Department). Our Daily Bread has seen a ten percent increase in need from last year this time. Our Daily Bread can be reached at 592-6325.
The Christmas Food and Toy Basket program gives food and toys to families in need during the holidays. Applications will start to be accepted on September 9th for anyone who thinks they are eligible for the program. Every child under 10 years old is guaranteed a toy. Last year, Lutheran Community Services gave out over 590 baskets. Individuals, groups, or companies can also adopt a family. If someone adopts a family they are asked to provide a meal and they have the option to also provide gifts for the family.
The thrift store and food pantry are located at 223 Oakland Square and are open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm and Saturday from 8:30 am to noon. The food pantry works off a voucher system. With a voucher every member in a family will receive three meals a day for three days. The thrift store and pantry can be contacted at 592-9914.
The thrift store accepts gently-used items as donations and sells them at a reduced price. The thrift store accepts donations during business hours and even provides pick up for donations. Money generated by the store stays in Logan County and funds Loving Hands, Our Daily Bread, the Christmas program, and the food pantry.
Loving Hands is an adult daycare facility for the elderly. The service provides meals and snacks, entertainment, and social time. Loving Hands Adult Day Care is located at 416 West Chillicothe Avenue and can be reached at 593-9822 for questions.
