Authorities are investigating a possible murder suicide in rural Union County.
The sheriff’s office found the body of a man Friday night following a standoff that lasted several hours east of Marysville near the Union/Delaware county line.
Deputies said it started after a neighbor found a woman injured in a ditch outside of her home near Smart-Cole and Brown Roads Friday afternoon around four o’clock.
That woman later died.
Deputies believe the victim's estranged husband shot her and was inside their home.
After hours of trying to contact someone inside the home, deputies entered and found the husband’s body.
"There wasn't any rush to go in there, put our officer's lives at risk to locate him at that time, said Union County Sergeant Chris Skinner. "So we just made attempts to contact, utilizing family and friends and whatever to make contact with any of them, he just didn't respond to any of them, so at some point we just had to go in and find them."
Deputies have not released the names of either victim.
The incident remains under investigation.
