Brandy Bowers, Assistant Coordinator of Community Services at Green Hills Community of West Liberty, was recently published in Creative Forecasting, a monthly publication for activity and recreational professionals.
In preparation for National Adult Day Services Week in September, the publication conducts a contest for activity ideas. Her winning idea is titled, “Chit chat this and that” to promote thought, socialization, and discussion.
Her suggestion is to keep a container of slips of paper with a single word on each such as “imagine,” “grandparent,” “vacation.”
For an activity, pull out a slip of paper and ask questions to provoke thought and discussion about the word.
Examples of questions are, “What immediately comes to your mind when you hear the word _____;” “How has _____ affected your life?” “What does ___ make you think of?”
Mrs. Bowers explained that the activity could be done daily, choosing one word to discuss. Another idea is that each person chooses a word to talk about.
For her winning entry, Green Hills Community receives $50 to purchase supplies for DayBreak, Green Hills’ adult day services program, where she works.
Mrs. Bowers has been with Green Hills Community for 17 years. She resides in rural Bellefontaine with her husband, Mark.
