High school football returned on Friday night, as we rolled into Week 1 with teams full of hope and anticipation as several crossover CBC/OHC contests were on slate.
First up broadcast live on 98.3 WPKO was the Indian Lake Lakers and the Triad Cardinals.
The host Lakers took the early lead 7-0, but the Cardinals ran off four uncontested scores to head into the locker room up at the half 28-7.
In the second half, the Lakers drove deep into Triad territory, only to have a fourth and ½ yard conversion pass intercepted by Triad in the end zone, essentially ending the Laker threat. Defenses continued to dominate the rest of the game, with the 28-7 score standing up as the final in a win for Triad.
Cardinals quarterback Trent McIntyre was 13-for-20 for 246 yards with two TD passes.
Speedster Doug Lowe had 6 catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns.
Listen to Chad Wilkinson and Gabe Wickline call a 40-yard TD pass from McIntyre to Lowe.
On 1390 WBLL, the Toby Smith era began at Bellefontaine after a very successful run at WL-S.
The Chiefs were powered by Jordan Baughman’s pair of touchdown runs (7 & 34 yards), and were in the game late in the third quarter, closing the Wapak lead to 21-17, but in the end the Redskins were too tough, coming out on top 35-17.
Bellefontaine rushed for 234 yards.
Quarterback Jake Kennedy ran for 136 yards and passed for 90 yards.
For Wapakoneta, Kodi Morgan completed 6-of-10 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Running back Adam Henderson had a 30-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter and a game-sealing touchdown run in the fourth quarter. He was named the Steve Austin's Player of the Game.
Listen to the complete postgame interview with BHS head coach Toby Smith.
The Chiefs will host Sidney next Friday on WBLL.
The Redskins will host rival Kenton.
In the PeakofOhio.com bonus game, West Liberty-Salem picked up right where Coach Smith left off, picking up win #1 for new coach Dan McGill and the 25th-straight regular season win for the Tigers, thumping Greenon 62-13.
Benjamin Logan dropped its opener at home to Cincinnati Summit Country Day 52-7.
