Sandy Beach Bridge groundbreaking invites public to re-opening of historic structure

The Indian Lake Area Historical Society and Sandy Beach Bridge Committee recently announced a groundbreaking ceremony to kick off the Harborwalk portion of the Sandy Beach Bridge Project in Russells Point will be held in the near future.

The community is invited to attend the ceremony on October 27th at 1:00 p.m. at the East end of the bridge site. The event is free open to the public.

Through private funding and a grant from the Logan County Commissioners, the Historical Society has completed the reverse engineering necessary to ensure the soundness of the harbor bridge.

The harbor bridge has been an icon of both Indian Lake and Logan County since its construction in the 1920s. The bridge served as the pedestrian connection between the two sides of the amusement park which, until falling into disrepair during the ‘60s, was known as “Ohio’s Million Dollar Playground.”

The goal of the bridge renovation project is to establish a park type facility once again accessible to the public that will be a central feature for community activities and events.

The Historical Society is now in the process of raising $250,000 which, along with “in kind” donations, will be used to create the Harbor Walk encircling Russells Point harbor and to re-deck the bridge with the newest in composite materials and handrails. The project design includes landscaping and benches installed along the length of the Harborwalk and strategically placed markers with brief descriptions memorializing the places, characters and activities of that bygone era.

Current fundraising efforts have now put the committee in a position for an official groundbreaking of the Harborwalk. With continued fundraising, the committee hopes to initiate the commitments for the bridge decking materials soon.
