Local Purple Heart recipient speaks to Indian Lake students

Monday, November 11th marked Veterans Day and Indian Lake Elementary students learned what it means to selflessly give to your country.

Sergeant Gary Yoakam visited with Indian Lake Elementary grades kindergarten through 4th grade on Veterans Day.

The sergeant wore his Class A uniform and explained what each of the items he wore stood for. He also shared how, by doing extraordinary things, those in the military can earn further medals or challenge coins.

Yoakam also shared his rich experience as a former member of the army.

He was an infantry member and went to infantry school, airborne school, and air assault school, which included repelling from helicopters.

Yoakam was also a member of the 101st Airborne that was stationed in Fort Campbell, Kentucky from 2001 to 2002.

He was then deployed to Iraq where he was injured during combat in November of 2003 after he was struck by an R.P.G.

After losing a limb from the attack, he received the Purple Heart Award and is now medically retired.

Sergeant Yoakam has three daughters that attend Indian Lake Elementary.

The students had the chance to shake his hand, thank him, and wish him a happy Veterans Day.
