Indian Lake Schools adopt one bus route plan (Audio included)

The Indian Lake Board of Education conducted their meeting for June Monday night. A change in the transporting of students to school was approved.

Superintendent Pat O’Donnell informed the board that the district will use a “one-route” system beginning in the fall. All Indian Lake students are bussed to the same campus area and by using the new system, the district will save approximately $100,000 a year.  O’Donnell noted that all other county districts use this plan successfully.

Because of the change, all district buildings will begin classes at 8:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m.

The board had a moment of silence for high school student Hunter Valentine. Valentine, 17, died in a car crash on June 8th. Funeral services were Wednesday, June 12th.

O’Donnell expressed his displeasure with proposed House Bill 59. The bill would replace publicly elected board members on joint vocational school district (JVSD) boards with appointed individuals from the private sector. Based on the initial reaction from districts across the state, O’Donnell is optimistic that the bill will not pass.

Next year is the final year for the Race to the Top program using money obtained from grants.  Race to the Top has been instrumental in staff development. The Excellence with Distinction rating that the district received this past year can be attributed, in part, to Race to the Top.  O’Donnell urged the board to begin looking at funding possibilities for the program when the grant funds end.

The board accepted the resignations for the purpose of retirement for bus drivers Elizabeth Grube and Beverly Titus.

Bus driver Misty Satterly, educational assistant Lea Del Hurley, high school physical education teacher David Starr, elementary physical education teacher Kevin Eyink, and food service employee Sonya Eaton resigned. Eyink also served as the varsity baseball coach.

The board approved the high school’s varsity football team’s journey to the University of Kentucky for a one-day camp on July 20th. The team will travel by school bus and leave at 5:00 a.m.

The board will next meet July 15th at 6:30 p.m.

Pat O'Donnell discusses three topics.
