Leo A. Mackesy, 91, of Lakeview, passed away at his home surrounded by his family on Thursday evening, August 23, 2012.
He was born on July 9, 1921 in Oilsprings, Ontario, Canada to the late William & Alice Nelson Mackesy. He was also preceded in death by two sons, Billy and Donny, two grandsons, Timothy J. and Donald W., five sisters, Margaret, Dora, Kate, Mary and Ann, and six brothers, Bill, Tom, Jim, Jack, Pat, and Frank.
On September 22, 1945, Leo married the former Donelda Marian Irene Bridekirk in Petrolia, Ontario and she survives along with seven children, Doreen (Curt) Peterson of Bellefontaine, OH, Marilee (Glenn) Lerman of Fairfield, OH, and Carol (Bill) Gunn of Bryan, OH, Larry (Jayne) Mackesy, Doug (Susi) Mackesy, John (Roxanne) Mackesy, and Paul (Lisa) Mackesy, all of Lakeview, 21 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.
Leo was a member of St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church in Russells Point, OH for 58 years. He was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 4378 of Russells Point and a Past Grand Knight. He also called Bingo at St. Mary of the Woods for 20 years. A pipefitter/ welder by trade, he worked out of Local 776 in Lima, OH for 33 years. He also owned and operated Lake Sanitation for 23 years. More than hobbies, Leo engaged in carpentry, building and restoring homes. He enjoyed playing cards and was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he will be greatly missed.
Reverend Patrick L. Sheridan will conduct a Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 29, 2012, at St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church. Visitation will be Tuesday, August 28th from 2-4 & 6-8 pm at Shoffstall Funeral Home, Lakeview and from 10-11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be given in his name to Universal Home Health and Hospice Care or St. Mary of the Woods Catholic Church.
