The Urbana University men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker on Tuesday night at Ohio Dominican University. Urbana let a late 5-point lead in regulation slip out of their grasps, and point guard Mike Newton's game-tying attempt was blocked at the buzzer as ODU edged Urbana 93-91 in overtime.
The game featured 17 lead changes and 17 ties as neither team could build a lead of more than 6 points all game long. The Blue Knights' biggest lead of the night was a 5-point advantage with just 11 seconds remaining in regulation. ODU's Mark Minch sank a long three at the top of the key to draw the home team within two with nine ticks left on the clock. The Panthers quickly fouled UU's Derrick Sanderfer, who made the first, but missed the game-icing second free throw.
Trailing 84-81 with five seconds left, ODU called a timeout to set up their game-tying attempt. Brandon Carr sank his fourth three of the night while falling backwards at the top of the key.
Stunned by the improbable comeback, Urbana turned the ball over on three of their first six possessions in overtime, digging themselves into a five-point hole with 43 seconds remaining. Like ODU in regulation, the Blue Knights came charging back. Sanderfer banked in a three from the wing to draw the visitors within two points at 93-91. After ODU missed a runner in the lane at the other end with 9 seconds left, UU got the ball into their point guard's hands. Newton drove the lane and got the game-tying shot off in time, but ODU's Trent Weaver got a piece of the attempt which fell short.
Junior forward Casey Baker posted a career-night for UU in the loss. Baker recorded a double-double, finishing with a team-high 23 points and 11 boards. Baker shot 9 of 13 from the field and added 3 assists to his stat line. Senior guard Danny Goins poured in 22 points and pulled down 6 boards while playing all 45 minutes for the Blue Knights. Newton also played all 45, chipping in 13 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists. Sanderfer added 11 points off the bench.
After a pair of tough road losses to open the season, Urbana hosts its home opener on Monday night. The Blue Knights will welcome the Fighting Scots from Edinboro University to the Grimes Center for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. Urbana and Edinboro are very familiar non-conference foes.
Last November, Urbana missed a game-tying three at the buzzer in an 88-85 loss, and two seasons ago in UU's 2011 home opener, the teams got locked into a triple-overtime game won by the Blue Knights 114-111 when a Scot three at the buzzer missed.
