Tigers beat Summit Country Day; face Mechanicsburg in regional final

Tiger junior Landon WilliamsThe West Liberty-Salem Tigers scored three touchdowns in the first 12 minutes and 5 seconds of the game and used a strong defense the rest of the way to hold off Summit Country out of Cincinnati 21-13.

The Tigers improve to 10-2 on the year and will take on Ohio Heritage Conference foe Mechanicsburg in a rematch of a regular season match won by Mechanicsburg.  The Indians advanced defeating Miami East 31-14.

The Tigers scored on their first two possessions on touchdown runs of 1 and 9 yards by senior running back Taylor Cordell.  On the first play of the second quarter, quarterback Brandon Upton hit Landon Williams with a 9 yard touchdown pass.

Cordell shared Steve Austin player of the game honors with the West Liberty-Salem defense.  The Tigers intercepted three passes and sacked Silver Knight quarterback Antonio Woods three times.

On negative note for Tiger fans, Upton left the game in the fourth quarter with an ankle injury.  He did not return to the game and his status for next week’s game is uncertain.

The date, time and location of the Tiger-Indian matchup have yet to be announced.

Several areas teams were in playoff action Friday night.

The undefeated Kenton Wildcats kept rolling defeating Triway 46-6.

The Central Buckeye Conference has a team in the regional final.  Tipp City improved to 12-0 as the Red Devils cruised past Thurgood Marshall 30-13.

Tipp City will face the Trotwood-Madison Rams.  The Rams rudely ended Springfield Shawnee’s season by whipping the Braves 44-7.
