Lakers top Cougars in tourney basketball; other finals

Lakers rally past Kenton RidgeIndian Lake overcame a slow start and survived a fourth quarter where they scored 1 field goal while beating Kenton Ridge Saturday night 54-43 on 98.3 WPKO.

The Cougars were on top early 9-2 and 12-5, but Indian Lake surged ahead in the 2nd quarter and led 27-26 at the half.

The Lakers increased their lead to 43-36 going in to the final quarter.  Despite not scoring a point in the first 6:00 of the 4th quarter the Lakers still held the lead at 43-38.  The Cougars started fouling and the Lakers Christian Grider and Jalon Tuttle hit 8 out of 8 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Grider paced the Lakers with 14 points (7-8 free throws) while Tuttle ended with 11, Cole Wurster added 10 and Ivan Reichert finished with 9.  As a team the Lakers made 15 of 18 shots from the free throw line.

Indian Lake will now face Carroll in the Sectional Semi Final Wednesday night at 7:30.

Top-seeded Urbana was also a winner Saturday in the Div. II sectionals, knocking off cross-county rival Graham 54-35. The Hillclimbers will face Bellefontaine in Springfield Tuesday at 6 p.m., the Chieftains having drawn a first-round bye. All of the action can be heard on 1390 WBLL with News Director Bill Tipple calling the play-by-play.

In the Division IV sectional quarters at Piqua High School, Riverside opened up the tourney with a win, edging Mississinawa Valley 41-39. The Pirates will next play #4 seed Ft. Loramie in the sectional semis at Piqua HS on Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Also posting a win at the Div. IV sectional in Piqua was Mechanicsburg as the Indians whipped Covington 67-45. The Indians will play #2 seed Houston at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

In other boys scores from around the area:

Tipp City downed Dayton Meadowdale 38-33.

Springfield Shawnee defeated Northwestern 67-38.

Dayton Carroll tripped Greenon 56-42.

Miami East clipped Waynesville 56-42.

In the Div. IV girls tourney at Sidney High School Saturday, top-seeded Ft. Loramie won, as did #2 seed Russia. In Ft. Loramie’s three tournament games this year, the Redskins have outscored their opponents by an amazing 167 points, or over 55 points per game.
