Tigers sweep Champaign County track meet

The West Liberty-Salem boys and girls track teams won the Champaign County meet at Urbana Tuesday night.

The meet was shortened due to lightning in the middle of the 3200 meter run.

For the boys, senior speedster Conner Karg re-set his school record and won the 400 meter dash in 50.06.

Other first-place finishers included Taylor Cordell in the 100 meter dash, Karg in the 200 meter dash, Joey Adams in the 1600 meter run, Levi Spencer in shot put, and the 4x200m relay team of Cordell, Nikolas Yoder, Kam Evans, and Karg, and the 4x800m relay team of Adams, Ross Kelley, Sam Strickland, and Alex Steiner.

Cordell finished second in the 110m hurdles.

The West Liberty-Salem girls won the meet for the third consecutive year.

Madison Gantz and Morgan Freyhof both won two individual events. Gantz captured the shot put and discus, and Freyhof won the 200 and 400 meter dashes.

Other first-place finishes were provided by Sierra McCall in long jump, Abigail Rabenstein 100 meter hurdles, Caylee Karg 300 meter hurdles, Katie Hartsel 800 meter run, the 4x200 relay of Michaela Rausch, Karg, Rabenstein and Freyhof, and the 4x800 relay team of Alyssa Strickland, Leah Cole, Ashley Rabenstein, and Hartsel.

Head coach Ann Vogel said, "It was exciting to watch three athletes (Karg, McCall, and Hartsel) win their first-ever high school events tonight. We also had several season and career personal bests, and we had a solid team contribution across the board."

WL-S competes at the prestigious Wayne Invitational Thursday and Friday.
