UU men’s soccer projected to finish third in MEC

Urbana University soccer teamThe Notre Dame College Falcons have been picked to win the Mountain East Conference men’s soccer championship after a vote conducted by the league's coaches. NDC finished with 35 points in the poll and was picked to finish first on five ballots.

Notre Dame went 15-2 and captured the MEC regular season championship last season with 33 points on an 11-1 league record. The Falcons graduated a few key pieces on defense, but return leading scorer Adam Mitchell who netted 14 goals a season ago. Notre Dame advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season and will begin the year ranked 16th in the country in the NSCAA poll.

Charleston was narrowly picked second finishing with 32 points and collecting the other two first-place votes. The Golden Eagles, the 2013 MEC Tournament champions, went 11-5-1 in 2013 and just missed out on an NCAA Tournament berth. All four of UC's first team All-MEC selections return in 2014.

Urbana was chosen third, followed by West Virginia Wesleyan and Wheeling Jesuit in a tie for fourth. Shepherd and Concord rounded out the poll.

The Blue Knights went 7-7-4 last fall.

The season will get underway on Thursday, September 4th.
