The Bellefontaine varsity volleyball team played with purpose Tuesday as they remembered a late student before their home match against Tipp City.
The team honored Joy Dela Pena (pictured). The senior passed away last month from leukemia.
The Lady Chiefs raised about $250 through a baked goods sale and a 50/50 raffle. The money will be donated to the Dela Pena family.
Bellefontaine then swept Tipp City 26-24, 25-17, and 25-20.
Shelbi Kauffman had 26 digs, Kameren Haley blasted 13 kills, Jaelyn Jester delivered 20 assists, Carley Strzalka tallied 11 digs, Jordan Lininger had 15 assists, Jessica Kinchen tallied 19 digs and 9 kills, Jazmyn Haley recorded 10 kills, Whitney Rader contributed 5 kills and 2 blocks, and Kenzie Brunswick added 5 kills.
Kauffman, Rader, Strzalka, and Lininger had a perfect night serving.
The JV Chiefs lost 17-25, 21-25.
Bellefontaine will host a Volley for the Cure match against Indian Lake Thursday. All proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The Benjamin Logan varsity team defeated host Urbana in four sets. The scores were 27-25, 25-18, 21-25, and 25-20.
Ciarra Wirick had 10 kills, 5 aces, and 11 digs, Alex Thompson recorded 9 kills and 2 solo blocks, Kylee Smith added 7 kills, and Jessica Yoder and Courtney Stewart were key on serve receive and defense.
Benjamin Logan moves to 11-0 overall and 5-0 in the CBC.
The JV Raiders fell to Urbana in consecutive sets.
Madison Mahan had 5 kills, Katie Bisel recorded 4 kills, and Tayler Rose had 8 assists.
The freshman Raiders lost to the Hillclimbers 23-25 and 17-25.
Autumn Walborn had 4 kills, 3 aces, and 1 block, Aubree Durnell came up with 7 digs, and Jessie Griffin had 1 ace and 1 dig.
All three teams will visit Tipp City on Thursday. The freshman game starts at 4:30.
The Indian Lake varsity lost at Greenon in four games 25-13, 21-25, 23-25, and 23-25.
Allison Knief had 9 kills. Claire Maier recorded 29 assists and 3 aces.
The JV Lakers won 25-17, 25-15.
Jordan Risner was solid on serving and offense, Monica Boswell served and set well, and Tori Lones shined on defense.
The Indian Lake 8th grade team outlasted Mechanicsburg 17-25, 27-25, and 25-19.
Sammi Miller led the attack with 7 kills and 5 aces. Madison Thompson, Rachel Kimmel, and Victoria Wauben all had a strong night passing.
The 7th grade Lakers swept Mechanicsburg 25-11, 25-12.
Payton Manahan was 11 of 11 serving with 7 aces, Libby Cotterman tallied 7 aces, Jenni Kaffenbarger and Aubrey Grider each had 2 kills, and Lauren Anderson, Jade Lewis, and Kaffenbarger were perfect on serve receive.
