Urbana Erupts for School-Record 74 Points

A return to conference play helped the Urbana University football team snap a two-game road losing streak on Saturday afternoon at Kentucky Wesleyan College. Multiple school records fell in the landslide 74-0 victory over as Urbana improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the GLVC, boosting the Blue Knights into second place in the conference as one of several teams with one loss.

For the first time since Week 1, Urbana topped 40 points in a game, improving to 25-0 all-time when the offense scores 40 or more. They nearly doubled that total, scoring a school-record 74 points on the Panthers’ home field. The previous record was 69 points, scored in last season’s home finale.

The Blue Knights led the Panthers 38-0 at the half behind the impressive play of junior QB D.J. Mendenhall. Mendenhall racked up over 250 yards of total offense and 4 touchdowns before the break. He ended his day 22 for 34 passing with 5 touchdowns through the air and another on the ground. Mendenhall threw for a career-high 365 yards. He racked up another 57 yards rushing.

Senior running back Jeffvon Gill led the ground attack for the Blue Knights, finishing with 131 yards and a score. Eight different Blue Knights recorded rushing attempts as Urbana collected 319 yards on the ground. Freshman James Duncan dashed for 59 yards on his first 7 carries of the season. Duncan’s 49-yard touchdown jaunt with 3:28 remaining gave the Blue Knights the scoring record.

Mendenhall’s favorite target through the air was, once again, wide receiver Nate Wilburn-Ogletree. The junior had 8 catches for 75 yards and a score. He has exactly one TD catch in each of Urbana’s first 6 contests this season.

Sophomore wideout Mark Johnson found pay dirt three times on 6 catches.  He finished with a team and career-high 120 yards. Junior wide receiver Joe Webb returned from injury to catch 4 balls for 67 yards in his first game action in three weeks. Kenya Coombs added a 73-yard touchdown on his only catch of the day in the third quarter.

As a team, the Blue Knights tallied a team-record 684 yards. It’s the third time in the past seven games Urbana has topped 600 total yards of offense. Defensively, the Blue Knights held the Panthers to just 156 total yards. The shutout is just the second in school history on the road.

Twenty-six different Blue Knights recorded a tackle. Freshman D’Gary Wallace led the way with 9 stops, including 2 sacks. Senior defensive end Perry Jenkins recorded 7 tackles, and fellow defensive lineman Kyle Wallace tallied 6 tackles, a sack and a forced fumble. David McComas finished with 6 stops, a blocked punt that was returned for a score and his second interception of the season.

Next Saturday, Urbana plays its third of three straight road games. The team travels to familiar GLVC foe St. Joseph’s College for a noon kickoff. Urbana is 2-1 all-time against the Pumas, including a 42-0 Homecoming shutout in Urbana last season.
