Bellefontaine golf standout Cody Lyons fell 6 strokes short of the state tournament Thursday.
Lyons (pictured) carded an 81 in the Division I Boys District Golf Tournament at Weatherwax Golf Club in Middletown.
Cody shot a 43 on the first 9 holes and 38 on the back 9.
A score of 75 or better would have qualified him for the state tournament.
Coach Ryan Sawmiller said, "I thought Cody battled and overcame a lot of obstacles beyond his control today. First, he had to overcome a course that was over 7000 yards where there is no course within a 30-mile radius even close to that yardage to Bellefontaine. Our home course is 1,000-yards shorter. Second, he had never played the course before. Third, he had to wait out a 1.5-hour frost delay, and last, after 3 holes, was 4 over par. My hat goes off to how our junior represented Bellefontaine and our golf program today. I am very proud of Cody on his accomplishments this season and have raised the bar for others and himself when he returns as a senior next year." Sawmiller continued, “Special thanks go out to Tree Links Golf Course and Urbana Country Club for their hospitality as they provided us with complimentary rounds of golf to help Cody prepare for his endeavor today.”
