West Liberty-Salem standout Nick Sims competed in the first of two rounds at the Division III state golf tournament at North Star Resort in Sunbury Friday.
Sims shot a 78, which puts him tied for 7th place.
The co-leaders shot a 73.
The final 18 holes will be played Saturday.
Head coach Darrin Leichty said, "Nick had a very good opening nine holes. When he made the turn he made some bad swings, but was able to minimize the damage. He finished the final 3 holes by going one under. Nick's round was solid but he knows that he left some shots out on the course. His scramble percentage will have to be better on Saturday if he hopes to push to the top of the leaderboard."
