In an impressive display of offense, the Urbana University volleyball team completed a straight sets sweep of visiting Central State on Tuesday night in the Grimes Center. Urbana's front row dominated in a 25-7, 25-11, 25-7 conference win over the Lady Marauders.
Leading the Urbana attack was sophomore hitter Kelsey Volkmer. Volkmer improved her conference lead in kills by adding 12 in just 18 attempts. Hitters Katlin Kremer, Megan Verhoff, and Chelsea Winderl were all very efficient at the net as well. Kremer (pictured) had 9 kills in 13 attempts. Verhoff smashed 6 kills in 9 attempts, and Winderl finished with 6 kills in 11 attempts. As a team, Urbana hit an incredible .541, which beat the previous single match team record of .472. Volkmer’s .611 attack percentage is the third highest in a match during UU's D-II era. Kremer hit a team-best .692, but she did not meet the 12-kill minimum to register what would have been the highest single match hitting percentage in school history.
Setting them all up was freshman setter Mary Hendricks. Hendricks had 32 assists in addition to 2 kills, 2 aces, 3 digs and 3 blocks. Seniors Amy Hickman and Karla Vogel combined for 5 aces and 18 digs on the night.
The conference win was Urbana's second over the Lady Marauders this season. Urbana improved to 8-17 overall and 4-1 in G-MAC play. Central State slipped to 0-11 and 0-4 in the G-MAC. Urbana owns the all-time series against Central State 31-5.
The Blue Knights return to the court Thursday night at future conference foe West Liberty University for a 6:30 p.m. match. The two teams met earlier this season at the Fairmont State Invitational. The Hilltoppers eeked out a 5-set victory with a 15-12 win in the fifth-set tiebreaker.
