The Urbana University football team stay undefeated at home this season with a 53-7 win over visiting William Jewell College on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Knights raced out to a 40-0 first half lead to cruise past the Cardinals in convincing fashion.
With the loss, William Jewell dropped to 2-8 and 1-6 in conference play. Urbana improved to 7-3 overall and 5-2 in the GLVC. The Blue Knights are 5-0 at home this season. Their last loss at UU Stadium came in the 2011 home opener, a streak of 9 straight home victories.
Urbana opened the scoring just two minutes into the game. Quarterback D.J. Mendenhall found a streaking Joe Webb down the middle of the field for a 38-yard score, and the home team led 6-0 after the missed extra point. Just three minutes later, Mendenhall marched the Blue Knights down the field for another score. The junior signal caller found wide receiver Nate Wilburn-Ogletree on a fade route in the corner of the end zone to put the Blue Knights on top 13-0.
From there, the Blue Knight rushing attack took control. Senior running back Jeffvon Gill scored on runs of 64 and 23 yards to grow the lead to 26-0 after one quarter of action. Donte Washington spelled Gill on the first drive of the second quarter and scored from 5 yards out to put the home team ahead 33-0. Before the half ended, Mendenhall connected with Gill out of the backfield on a 9-yard touchdown.
The Cardinals avoided the shutout thanks to a Thomas Cook 3-yard touchdown scamper at the start of the third quarter, but Urbana ended the day’s scoring with another Webb touchdown catch and a Washington 30-yard run. Webb’s second TD reception of the afternoon was the 18th of his career, breaking Barry Quinn’s school record. Webb also broke the career receiving yards record, finishing with 195 yards on 6 catches on Saturday. Entering the final game of his junior year, Webb has 2,289 career receiving yards.
Mendenhall threw for 293 yards and 4 scores on 15 of 21 passing. He broke the single season school record for passing yards, a mark that stood since 1998. Mendenhall has 2,914 passing yards through 10 games.
Gill gained 115 yards on the ground, giving him 934 on the season. Washington added 81 yards on just 7 carries.
Defensively, the Blue Knights caused four Cardinal turnovers. Brian Ridley and Jake Krupko picked off Sean Shelton passes and returned them for a total of 80 yards. Lamar Ross also had a sack, strip and fumble recovery for another 38 yards, and Drew Underwood ripped away another fumble from a Cardinal ball carrier. David McComas led the Blue Knights in tackles with 12, including 1 for a loss. Walter Miliner, Perry Jenkins and Daniel Goodrum all added 9 stops. Jenkins had half a sack and 2.5 tackles for a loss.
Next week, Urbana hosts GLVC frontrunner Indianapolis. Saturday’s game is the final game in the careers of 15 Urbana seniors. The group will be honored before the noon kickoff.
