Volkmer headlines Urbana University’s six all-conference selections

The Great Midwest Athletic Conference released its 2012 Volleyball Awards on Friday, just prior to the inaugural G-MAC Volleyball Championships.

Cedarville’s Doug Walters took home G-MAC Coach of the Year honors after leading his team to the top seed with an overall record of 30-6 and an undefeated regular-season in conference (8-0).

Trevecca Nazarene hitter Kristen Johnson earned G-MAC Player of the Year. Johnson, who was a four-time G-MAC Athlete of the Week, has recorded 15 triple-doubles, including four in her last five contests. In conference, she is the only player to rank in the top ten in five of the six main statistical categories.

Cedarville freshman Tori Thompson took home the final individual award, G-MAC Freshman of the Year. In her first year as a member of the Yellow Jackets, Thompson recorded 194 kills and 88 blocks. She recorded 10 or more kills four times this season and three times had seven or more blocks.

Five of the seven spots on the First Team went to top-seeded Cedarville. Player of the Year Johnson grabbed another spot, and Urbana University sophomore hitter Kelsey Volkmer, pictured, (Galion, OH/Colonel Crawford HS) received the other.

Last season, Volkmer was tabbed the D-II Independent Freshman of the Year, and she also earned All-Ohio Independent First Team honors. She followed her rookie season with one of the most successful campaigns in program history. Twice, Volkmer earned G-MAC Player of the Week while demolishing several school records. Her 37-kill performance in a 5-set win over Trevecca Nazarene smashed her previous single match school record by 12 kills. Volkmer has a single season school record 429 kills and 4.09 kills per set. She leads the G-MAC by almost one full kill per set. She already ranks 8th all-time at UU in career kills (733). Volkmer also possesses a terrific all-around game in addition to her eye-popping attack numbers. She finished top 5 on the squad this season in aces (17), assists (20), digs (203) and blocks (37).

Two first-year Blue Knights landed on the G-MAC’s Second Team. Redshirt freshman Katlin Kremer (St. Henry, OH/St. Henry HS) returned from injury to turn in an impressive rookie campaign in the middle for the Blue Knights. The 6-1 hitter finished second to Volkmer in kills with 232, or 2.21 per set. She finished Top 10 in the conference in kills, kills per set, attack percentage (.203) and blocks (66).

Freshman setter Mary Hendricks (Urbana, OH/Urbana HS) joined Kremer on the Second Team. Hendricks led the G-MAC in assists per set (7.08), dishing out the fourth most assists in a single season at UU (712). Hendricks also finished 7th in the conference in aces per set (0.29) and ninth in digs per set (2.52).

Three Blue Knights earned G-MAC Honorable Mention. Senior co-captains Karla Vogel (Rochester, IN/Tippecanoe Valley HS) and Amy Hickman (Toledo, OH/Sylvania Southview) rounded out their 4-year Urbana careers with an all-conference nod, and freshman defensive specialist Kaci Eurez (Delaware, OH/Buckeye Valley HS) was recognized for her stellar play in the Blue Knights’ back row. Vogel is third all-time at UU in assists (2,570). Hickman led the Blue Knights in digs (365) this season, and Eurez was second in aces (29), third in assists (30), and fourth in digs (216).

The Blue Knights finished the regular season tied for second in the G-MAC with a 5-3 mark.
