Boggs’ Buzzer Beater Won’t Fall in 66-65 Loss to ODU
Urbana University freshman guard Kennedy Boggs sparked a second half Blue Knight rally against visiting Ohio Dominican University on Saturday afternoon, but her game-winning attempt at the buzzer rimmed out in Urbana’s 66-65 home opening loss.
The Blue Knights trailed ODU most of the afternoon. The Panther lead grew to as many as 11 in the first half, but the Blue Knights kept whittling away at the deficit until Urbana took a 40-38 lead on a Boggs steal and Andrea Vogel lay-in with 15 minutes to go. Over the next four minutes, Boggs racked up two more steals and 7 points to help UU maintain its lead.
Down the stretch, the teams swapped leads back and forth. Boggs’ fifth steal of the game with 30 seconds to play led to a three-point play by the freshman that put the home team back on top 65-64. ODU answered nine seconds later on a driving lay-up by Kacee Hockenberry, setting the stage for a furious ending.
After a timeout, the Blue Knights got Boggs a look on the baseline. Her shot missed and landed in the hands of Hockenberry, who was immediately fouled by Boggs. Hockenberry missed her free throw with 5.5 seconds left. Urbana’s Jessica Saffold rebounded the ball, got it ahead to Katy Barkley who tripped on a Panther and passed it to the wing to a wide-open Boggs. A hurried Boggs got the shot off without a tenth of a second to spare, but the game-winning attempt rattled around on the rim before falling off as the horn sounded.
Boggs scored a team-high 12 points during the Blue Knights’ second half comeback. She finished with 14 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals in 24 minutes off the bench. Ciara Geiger led UU with 16 points. DeVonyea Johnson added 10 points, all in the first half, to go along with a team-high 9 boards and 6 assists.
ODU was led by Katelyn Stuckey’s 24 points on 9 of 13 shooting and 4 assists.
The Panthers improve to 3-0 with the win. Urbana (1-2) travels to Hillsdale College on Tuesday night for their third road game of the season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
#12 USI Escapes UU 54-53
The Blue Knight men's basketball team had the 12th ranked team in the nation on the ropes on Saturday afternoon, but Urbana couldn't pull off the upset on the road. The University of Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles breathed a sigh of relief when Urbana's C.J. Reid missed a three-pointer with a second remaining as USI held on for a 54-53 victory.
Urbana led 25-20 before USI closed the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 2-point lead into the break. The Screaming Eagles scored 8 of the first 10 points in the second half to expand their lead to double digits, but the Blue Knights didn't quit.
Ognjen Rebic's second-chance putback with 48 ticks left on the clock brought the Blue Knights within a single point at 54-53. The Screaming Eagles failed to score on their next possession, and Urbana had an opportunity to win it on their final possession. Reid's look didn't fall and the Eagles pulled down a huge rebound with a second left to seal their second straight victory to open the 2012-13 season.
Urbana's Armond Battle led all scorers with 17 points. Danny Goins added 16 on 6 of 9 shooting, and Casey Baker contributed a team-high 9 rebounds despite being held scoreless.
After a 1-3 start on the road against three nationally ranked opponents, Urbana will host its home opener on Tuesday night. The battle-tested Blue Knights welcome regional rival Ashland University to the Grimes Center for a 7:00 p.m. start. The Eagles beat the Blue Knights by 15 in Ashland last season.
