Spencer resigns football post

After eight successful seasons at the helm of the Waynesfield-Goshen football program, Gary Spencer has decided to step down as head coach. Coach Spencer leaves as the longest tenured football coach in the program’s history. He also has the most wins in school history with 56. During Spencer’s tenure as head football coach, the Tigers were crowned NWCC champions four times (2005, 2006, 2009, 2011) and qualified for the state playoffs four times (2005, 2006, 2009, 2012).

Athletic Director Brett Purcell said, “It was an absolute pleasure to work with Coach Spencer and he ran a quality program that was extremely successful.”

Principal TJ Winkler said, “He cannot think of a better person as well as a great coach. He has been great role model for the students at W-G.”

Superintendent Chris Pfister said that in his brief tenure he has heard many people talk of their admiration for Coach Spencer and his ability to positively impact the lives of many student athletes.

Board President Dave Pepple said the board of education sincerely appreciates the exemplary work of Coach Spencer and wishes him well in all his future endeavors.

Board Resolution: Appreciation of Service

Whereas Head Football Coach Gary Spencer has led the W-G Football team for the most seasons (8) and to the most wins (56), with a record of 56-28; producing four league championships (2005, 2006, 2009, 2011); with a record of 9-1 in two years (05 and 09); also holding the all-time records of most offensive points in a season, consecutive games shutting out an opponent, going undefeated at home twice (05 and 06), undefeated away (09), and taking the team to the state playoffs in four seasons, the Board of Education sincerely appreciates the many years dedicated service and significant accomplishments of Head Coach Spencer on behalf of everyone in the district and community.

Waynesfield-Goshen will immediately begin the search for Spencer’s replacement. Interested candidates can send a resume and cover letter to the attention of Brett Purcell by December 31, 2012 – Athletic Director at 500 N. Westminster St. Waynesfield, OH 45896.
