The Urbana University women’s basketball team put a tough November behind them on Saturday afternoon with a 76-69 home win over the visiting Pumas from St. Joseph’s College. The victory snaps a 5-game Blue Knight skid that stretched over the final two weeks of November.
A Kate Francisco lay-up with 12:23 to play gave the Blue Knights a lead they would not relinquish. The sophomore center knocked down a three-pointer four minutes later to cap a 15-5 run.
The Pumas immediately answered back with a 7-0 run to trim a 10-point deficit to three, but that’s as close as the visitors would get as Urbana held on for the 7-point victory.
Five Blue Knights reached double figures in the win, led by Francisco’s 18. Francisco also pulled down 7 boards to go with 3 steals and 2 blocks. Sophomore guard Ciara Geiger poured in 16 points. Freshman guard Kennedy Boggs sank 6 of 12 attempts from the field to finish with 15 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in her third career start. Junior guard DeVonyea Johnson and senior center Andrea Vogel each chipped in 10 points apiece. Johnson also had 5 assists and Vogel pulled down 7 boards.
Urbana (2-6) is now off until next Saturday when the Blue Knights will travel to Wheeling Jesuit University to battle their future conference foes in a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
Urbana Slips Past Salem 87-71
In the opening game of Central State University's Ben Waterman Classic, the Urbana University men's basketball team topped Salem International University 87-71 on a neutral floor.
Urbana's win was their third in the last four tries. The Blue Knights improve to 4-4 on the season. The team did not win their fourth game until January 11th last season. Salem International slips to 3-4 with the loss. Saturday's matchup was the first of three meetings this season between the Blue Knights and Tigers.
Urbana's 87 points were a season-high. The last time the Blue Knights scored 87 or more was last February in a 95-93 overtime win at Salem International.
A trio of first-year transfers led the Blue Knights to victory. Senior guard Armond Battle scored a team-high 24 points. Battle also pulled down 7 rebounds. Sophomore power forward Ognjen Rebic recorded a double-double in the win, scoring 13 points to go with a team-high 12 rebounds, and junior forward C.J. Reid poured in 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting.
The Blue Knights are back in action on Sunday in Central State's Ben Waterman Classic. Urbana meets Washington Adventist University on Day 2 of the weekend invitational.
