The Urbana University women's basketball team fell short of a third straight victory over a GLIAC opponent with a winning record on Saturday afternoon. On the second day of the Wayne State University Holiday Classic, the Blue Knights dropped a 71-50 decision to the host Warriors.
In their previous two outings, Urbana had defeated Findlay and Northwood, but Saturday afternoon's loss drops the Blue Knights to 4-10 on the season. Wayne State improves to 6-3 overall, including a perfect 2-0 mark in their own weekend tournament. Urbana and Missouri-St. Louis posted 1-1 records, while Northwood finished the weekend winless at 0-2.
The Warriors raced out to a 37-25 halftime lead. A 14-1 Wayne State run at the start of the second half grew the home team's advantage to 25 with over 16 minutes to go. Urbana's attempts to come back were stifled by 3 of 23 shooting from behind the arc. The Blue Knights were also out-rebounded 64-37.
Junior guard DeVonyea Johnson was the only Blue Knight to reach double figures. Johnson made 3 of her 5 attempts from deep to finish with a game-high 17 points. She also tallied 7 boards, 2 assists and a block, earning All-Tournament honors after pouring in 13 points in UU's 71-67 win over Northwood on Friday. Urbana's leading scorer, sophomore Ciara Geiger, was held under 16 points for just the second time this season. Geiger finished with 8 points, 6 boards and 2 steals.
The UU women's basketball team leaves for Puerto Rico on Monday, where the Blue Knights will play UPR-Rio Piedras and UPR-Bayamon on Wednesday and Friday later this week. Wednesday's tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m.
