The Blue Knight men's basketball team had trouble shaking off the rust on Saturday afternoon at Davis & Elkins College after a 17-day layoff. The home Senators held Urbana to 19 first half points en route to an 85-73 victory.
The win is just the second of the season for the 2-7 Senators. Davis & Elkins was doubled up 120-61 by the #1 team in the nation, West Liberty, on Thursday night. Urbana drops to 6-9 overall after suffering their fifth loss in the last six outings.
Urbana's offense shot just 26% from the field in the first half. The Senators took advantage of the Blue Knights' cold shooting by building a 14-point lead at the break. The deficit grew to 25 with under 9 to play before the Blue Knights mounted a final charge. A 25-5 run pulled the visitors within 5 at 73-68 with 1:35 to play, but the Senators closed the door on Urbana's comeback attempt by knocking down 12 of 14 free throws down the stretch.
The Blue Knight backcourt led the late charge, led by Danny Goins' game-high 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Ramel Mitchell finished with 14 points, including 7 straight during the 25-5 run. Both Goins and Mitchell finished with 3 steals apiece. Junior forward C.J. Reid added 10 points and 5 steals in 15 minutes off the bench.
The Blue Knights play their next two games at home, where the team is 2-1 this season. On Wednesday night, the Blue Knights welcome UC-Clermont to the Grimes Center for a 7:00 p.m. game.
