Abbey Ledford (pictured), a junior infielder on the Kent State softball team and a graduate from West Liberty-Salem high school, was named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association scholar-athlete for the second time. Abbey, an early childhood education major, is the daughter of Gary and Lori Ledford.
Twelve of Kent State’s 22 softball players were recognized for the 2011-12 school year. The team had a cumulative 3.6 GPA, which is the highest in team history. The GPA places them third behind Robert Morris and Northern Colorado among Division I schools.
“We are extremely excited about our top 3 academic ranking for GPA”, Golden Flash head coach Karen Linder said. “Academics have always been the number one priority in our program and this ranking shows the dedication and hard work that our athletes demonstrate on a daily basis.”
On the field, Ledford had an impressive sophomore season. She appeared in all 57 games, batting .293. She led the team in RBI’s with 30 and hits with 51.
