The State football playoffs are down to the final four in each region after this past weekend’s regional finals.
Semi-locally, Springfield Shawnee advance in DIII, beating Jonathan Alder 21-10; Kenton advanced in DIV with a 30-28 over defending champion Columbus Bishop Hartley; the Midwest Athletic Conference flexed their muscle, with defending DVI champion Delphos St. John’s beating Leipsic 28-20 to earn an all-MAC semi-final game against Marion Local, who defeated fellow MAC member Minster 28-0. Coldwater also advanced out of the MAC in DV, beating West Jefferson 28-6.
In all, 11 of the 24 #1 regional seeds advanced to the final four, with division two having the most (3 – Avon, Trotwood-Madison, and Cols. Marion-Franklin) and divisions one and four only advancing one each (1–Toledo Whitmer, 4-Kenton). Three teams from the bottom of the top eight seedings (5-8) advanced: #5 Elida in division three and in division five #5 Elida and #7 Hicksville.
There are 10 undefeated teams left in the final field of 24, but only two meet head-to-head in the semis: Trotwood-Madison vs. Cols. Marion-Franklin in DII and Kirtland vs. Bucyrus Wynford in DV.
In addition to the MAC and their three conference representatives in the state semis, the Chagrin Valley Conference also has three teams in the hunt for titles – DII Aurora, DIII Chagrin Falls, and DV Kirtland.
Each of the first five divisions will also crown new champions in 2011 – DVI Delphos St. John’s is the only defending champion to reach the final four this year.
