This FREE outdoor event lets you have fun with nature as children used to do! Learn about Halloween customs and hear/participate in spooky stories that are appropriate for all ages.
Nature activities include making corn husk dolls, bobbing for apples on a string, and a game with acorns. Corny Facts and Kernels of Knowledge features a giant interactive quilted corn with facts about corn and includes a few CORNy jokes to share. Compare birds to bats and learn how they became symbols of Halloween. In addition, use modern materials to make a bat to decorate your own house.
Through storytelling, you’ll discover how our American customs grew from ancient practices and popular literature. Our featured author this year is Washington Irving (1783-1859) whose tales, “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” have become literary classics that still influence popular culture today.
End the celebration around a community bonfire (weather permitting). Participants are welcome to show how you celebrate Halloween today by wearing a costume, bringing a jack-o’-lantern to display and take home after the event.
