Two Springfield residents were arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop in Bellefontaine.

According to the Bellefontaine Police Department, the incident happened shortly after midnight Monday.

An officer spotted a red Chevrolet Impala in a parking lot near 224 North Detroit Street.

The car later left the area and traveled south on Main Street before the officer pulled it over near Gunntown Road.

The driver, 34-year-old Shawon Wilson, told police he only had a temporary driving permit.

The passenger, 46-year-old Toshia Craycraft, also did not have a valid driver’s license.

Both are from Springfield.

During the stop, Wilson told the officer he had marijuana in the center console.

Officers searched the vehicle and found two bags of marijuana and a cigarette pack containing a substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Police continued searching the car and found a loaded .380-caliber handgun in the trunk.

The gun had one round in the chamber and two more in the magazine.

Officers also found several packages of prescription medications prescribed to another person.

Both Wilson and Craycraft denied owning the suspected methamphetamine.

However, police said the substance was found in an area accessible to both of them.

During questioning, Craycraft told officers she had gone with Wilson to meet a man named Justin.

She said Wilson planned to make a drug sale.

Wilson told police he was meeting a longtime friend to collect money.

Craycraft also told officers she had a pipe used to smoke drugs hidden in her clothing.

She turned the item over to police.

Both Wilson and Craycraft were arrested and taken to the Logan County Jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance.

Police said a field test of the suspected methamphetamine came back positive.

The substance will be sent to the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation for further testing.

Both Wilson and Craycraft have prior felony convictions.
