A Champaign County man who was shot by police during a disturbance in Urbana earlier this year has been sentenced to prison.

Justin Beabout, 23,  pleaded guilty to felonious assault and was sentenced to six to nine years in prison, according to Champaign County court records.

The case stems from an incident on May 15 when Urbana police responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of West Church Street.

When officers arrived, Beabout was armed with a knife.

Police said he refused repeated commands to drop the weapon, leading an officer to fire their weapon.

Beabout was taken to a local hospital for treatment before being released and booked into the Tri-County Jail on the felonious assault charge.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation continues to investigate the officer-involved shooting, which is standard procedure.

The officer involved was placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of that investigation.

Beabout remains in custody at the Tri-County Jail.
