The following is a press release from the City of Bellefontaine Service-Safety Director Wes Dodds:
The City of Bellefontaine experienced significant flooding Wednesday evening following an estimated 4–5 inches of rainfall over approximately three hours.
Numerous areas throughout the City were impacted, and City crews continue to respond to flooding, drainage issues and other storm-related concerns.
The City will be assessing affected areas throughout Thursday to better understand the extent of the damage and identify areas requiring immediate attention.
One of the most serious issues occurred in the Michigan Street area, where infrastructure previously constructed by the City to address recurring flooding failed during the storm.
A section of the retaining wall failed, resulting in flooding to several nearby homes.
The pump serving the retention pond also became inoperable during the storm.
The City secured two large-capacity pumps as quickly as possible and began pumping the area to reduce water levels and limit additional damage.
The City recognizes the seriousness of what occurred on Michigan Street and will work directly with the affected residents regarding their damages.
The City will also conduct a complete review of the existing flood-control system, including the wall, pumping system, retention area and overall drainage in the area.
Independent engineering assistance will be utilized to determine what failed and what immediate and long-term improvements are necessary.
Michigan Street is not the only area of concern.
Flooding occurred in multiple locations throughout Bellefontaine, and the City will be reviewing those impacts as part of its response.
Prior to Wednesday’s storm, the City had already received proposals for a comprehensive review of Bellefontaine’s stormwater system.
In light of this event, the City intends to expedite the selection process and begin that work as quickly as possible.
The review will help identify problem areas throughout the City, evaluate existing infrastructure, and establish priorities for future improvements.
The amount of rain received in a short period of time was significant.
While that will be an important part of evaluating Wednesday’s flooding, the City is committed to looking closely at where problems occurred and what can be done to better protect residents and property in the future.
City crews will continue working in affected areas, assessing damage and addressing immediate concerns.
Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
