A Champaign County elections official is facing federal charges following his arrest earlier this month.
Chris J. Creamer, the deputy director of the Champaign County Board of Elections, is facing charges of distribution of child pornography and possession of child pornography involving a prepubescent minor, according to federal court records.
Creamer was booked into the Butler County Jail on March 10 and remains in custody.
Earlier reports indicate Creamer is being held on unspecified federal charges. Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones confirmed Creamer was being held at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service, which houses federal prisoners under contract with the county.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Marshals Service says no information can be released due to the case being an ongoing federal investigation.
Creamer reportedly calls in sick the day he is booked and is scheduled to be on vacation through the end of the following week.
The case is being handled at the federal level, and court documents are initially filed under seal. Prosecutors later move to unseal the case, though specific details about the allegations are not yet fully released.
It remains unclear whether any action has been taken regarding Creamer’s employment status with the Champaign County Board of Elections.
Authorities say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
