Ohio Democrats made big gains in Tuesday’s election, winning most of the state’s top offices and breaking up years of Republican control.
Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in the race for governor.
Acton will become Ohio’s first woman governor and the first Democrat to hold the office in 16 years.
Democrats also won the races for attorney general, secretary of state, and state treasurer.
John Kulewicz defeated Republican Keith Faber for Attorney General.
Kulewicz is an attorney from Upper Arlington, while Faber currently serves as Ohio’s state auditor.
Allison Russo defeated Republican Robert Sprague for Secretary of State.
Russo is a former State Representative and will replace Republican Frank LaRose.
In the race for State Treasurer, Democrat Seth Walsh defeated Republican Jay Edwards.
Walsh serves on Cincinnati City Council, while Edwards is a former state representative.
LaRose was the only Republican to win one of the four major statewide executive offices on the ballot.
He won the race for state auditor.
Democrats also picked up two seats on the Ohio Supreme Court.
Jennifer Brunner won re-election, while Marilyn Zayas defeated Republican incumbent Dan Hawkins.
Despite those victories, Republicans will keep a 5-to-2 majority on the state’s seven-member Supreme Court.
The results mark a major change in Ohio politics, with Democrats taking control of several important statewide offices for the first time in years.
