A major safety improvement project at one of Logan County’s busiest intersections is set to get underway next week.

Contractors working for the Ohio Department of Transportation will begin construction of a single-lane roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 33 and State Route 274, an area identified for improvements because of its history of serious and frequent crashes.

Beginning Tuesday morning, June 2, State Route 274 will close between State Route 235 and State Route 117 as crews start the first phase of construction.

The closure is expected to remain in place for approximately 150 days.

During the closure, drivers will be detoured from State Route 274 to State Route 235, then to State Route 708, U.S. 33, and State Route 117.

According to ODOT, studies determined that a roundabout would provide the greatest safety benefits at the intersection by reducing both the frequency and severity of crashes.

Officials acknowledge the project will cause temporary disruptions but say the long-term goal is to create a safer roadway for motorists traveling through the area.

Drivers are urged to slow down, stay alert, and eliminate distractions when traveling through work zones.

ODOT says additional updates will be provided as construction progresses.
