The Mechanicsburg Police Department announced Friday, February 6, that Lt. Robert McConnell has resigned from the department.
Shortly after his resignation, McConnell was charged with three counts of telecommunications harassment following an arrest by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court records, an arraignment was scheduled for February 13. On that date, a court-appointed attorney, identified in the docket as Attorney Hart, was assigned to represent McConnell. Prosecutor Roger Steffan was present, and a pretrial hearing was set for March 6 at 2 p.m.
The docket indicates McConnell was released on his own recognizance and is subject to a no-contact order with three individuals. A recusal filing is also noted in the case record.
McConnell had been the subject of numerous and recurring complaints from village residents and business owners over the past several years, and has served as an officer of the law in five different departments.
No additional details about the allegations were listed in the publicly available court documents.
