An off-duty Logan County Sheriff’s Deputy was injured Wednesday afternoon after accidentally shooting himself in the leg.
Bellefontaine Police were called shortly before 4:00 PM after the deputy reported that he had accidentally shot himself.
Officers found him seated on the front porch of a home on Lake Avenue with a tourniquet applied to his upper right thigh.
Police observed an entry wound above his right knee and an exit wound several inches below it.
There was no active bleeding when officers arrived.
The deputy told police he was preparing to leave for his shift and believed he had unloaded his Glock 26 nine-millimeter handgun.
He said he then attempted to dry fire the weapon, but the gun discharged.
Police determined the round traveled through his leg and into the carpet inside the home before coming to rest near a side table between two couches.
Bellefontaine EMS transported the deputy to Mary Rutan Hospital.
He was later transferred to Grant Medical Center for further treatment.
The deputy has since been released from the hospital.
