A Logan County woman has been sentenced after being convicted of child endangerment stemming from a 2024 investigation.
Judge Kevin Braig sentenced Abby Small, 35, of West Mansfield, to 36 months in prison on Tuesday afternoon.
Small sat stonefaced as Assistant Prosecutor Nathan Yohey read a statement from a family member about how her daughter is now thriving; however, she has had several medical issues.
The sentence follows a jury verdict delivered Thursday, February 26, when Small was found guilty on multiple charges, including third-degree felony endangering children, first-degree misdemeanor endangering children, and second-degree misdemeanor obstructing official business.
The case began on November 19, 2024, when deputies with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of possible child abuse and neglect involving Small’s then 4-year-old daughter.
According to investigators, deputies attempted to make contact at the home, but Small initially refused, barricading herself inside the residence.
Working alongside Logan County Children’s Services, deputies ultimately used mild force to enter the home to check on the children.
Small was taken into custody at the scene and charged with obstructing official business.
Authorities say the child was transported to Mary Rutan Hospital for treatment before being transferred to Nationwide Children’s Hospital due to concerns of severe malnutrition and additional injuries.
In January 2025, a Logan County Grand Jury indicted Small on the charges later upheld at trial.
