Bellefontaine Police Chief Chris Marlow is echoing concerns from county law enforcement as new data shows an increase in OVI and DUI incidents across Logan County in 2025.
According to Logan County Sheriff Randy Dodds, OVI cases have risen this year, prompting agencies to increase enforcement efforts and step up public awareness campaigns.
A breakdown of reported cases shows the Bellefontaine Police Department leading all agencies with 48 OVI arrests so far in 2025; however, this number is not an increase from 2024.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol has investigated 17 cases, while the Logan County Sheriff’s Office has responded to 31 incidents.
Additional agencies reporting OVI activity include Russells Point with 12 cases, Washington Township with 11, and West Liberty with two.
Chief Marlow said the rising numbers are troubling and underscore the continued dangers of impaired driving, especially during the holiday season when celebrations and gatherings increase.
He added that even though the City of Bellefontaine has not seen the same uptick, patrol officers are keeping sober driving enforcement and checks in high gear to prevent impaired driving before it happens.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that impaired driving affects far more than just the driver involved in a traffic stop.
Beyond the risk of serious injury or death, offenders may face steep fines, license suspension, higher insurance costs, and possible jail time.
As holiday events continue, Chief Marlow and Sheriff Dodds are urging residents to plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using a rideshare service, or arranging safe transportation before consuming alcohol.
“Driving impaired is completely preventable,” Marlow added. “Making the right choice protects you, your passengers, and everyone else on the road.”
