After a 20-year absence from competitive archery, Anthony “Tony” Stepp of Russells Point is proving that time away hasn’t dulled his skill.
Stepp recently returned to the sport following a hunting trip with his son-in-law and the purchase of a new bow—an experience that reignited his passion for archery. That decision has quickly paid off.
Competing March 21–22 at the 2026 National Field Archery Association Indoor Sectionals – Great Lakes, which featured archers from five states, Stepp earned a first-place finish in the Modern Bowhunter Freestyle Senior Male division. His success didn’t stop there.
Over the past two weekends, Stepp has put together an impressive run, adding a second-place finish at the state level along with two additional runner-up finishes in Ohio Archers Association competitions, marking a strong and consistent return to form during the indoor season.
“I’ve had a successful indoor season and I’m looking forward to carrying that momentum into outdoor 3D competitions next month,” Stepp said.
He credits much of his success to a strong support system, including Indian Lake Outfitters, his local bow shop, as well as Robert Smith, who first introduced him to archery. He also expressed appreciation for Nikki Taylor, who has supported his dedication to a demanding daily practice routine that includes shooting 200 arrows.
With a renewed passion and early success, Stepp’s return is already making an impact—and he’s just getting started.
